Lincoln County residents continue to be the target of scam attempts. This week the sheriff’s department reports that 2 more residents were targeted.
Last Monday, a resident in the Town of Tomahawk was contacted and told he needed to provide his Social Security and checking account numbers in order to get a new Medicare card. On Thursday a Town of Merrill resident received a post card telling her she had won a $100 gift card for either Walmart or Target. When she called an 800 number to claim her “prize” she was instructed they needed a checking account number so they could deduct a processing fee.
In both cases the victims provided their personal information to the scammers but quickly realized what they did and called the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were able to contact banks and get accounts closed before any damage was done.
