After lengthy debates and multiple meetings, the city of Merrill has finally settled on a location for a new fire department.
At this week’s meeting, their city council voted 7-1 to build a new more centrally located station on East Second Street. The vacant lot is near the post office, and will cost the city $250,000. Previous estimates on the actual construction costs for the building fell in the $4 million range.
Leaders are still working on the design of the new station, they hope to begin construction early next year and be in the new station the following year.
The city agreed to sell Station #2 to Agra Industries earlier this month for $138,000. Until the new station is finished, they will operate out of Station #1.
