Authorities are investigating the accidental death of a Wausau hunter near Weston.
The 50 year old was found at the base of a tree at his tree stand. He left from his home to go out late Monday morning. He was reported missing later that day after he failed to return home and didn’t respond to text messages.
Deputies from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Department along with the Department of Natural Resources were called to investigate. Police traced the signal from his cellphone to narrow the search area, and four family members found the victim lying at the base of a tree stand he had previously used for hunting.
According to the police report, the crossbow still was tied to a nylon rope commonly used to raise and lower weapons from tree stands.
