A nationally known anti-bullying advocate from Vermont will speak in Wausau today.
John Halligan has fought against bullying after his teen son committed suicide after being harassed at school and online.
Today, Halligan will speak at both John Muir and Horace Mann Middle Schools. Then tonight he will speak to parents and community members at Wausau East.
The presentation is part of the “I Am Somebody” anti-bullying project. At John Muir, teachers are tackling the topic of bullying throughout the year through this project, including more speakers planned for the spring. Much of the funding for the program is through grant money.
Halligan is more than just a speaker, in his home state of Vermont, he spearheaded a bully-prevention bill that was signed in to law and successfully advocated for the passage of a law that makes suicide-prevention education mandatory in that state’s public schools.
