Wisconsin School Crossing Guard Week

18 Jan News

Today wraps up Wisconsin Adult School Crossing Guard Recognition Week, and several local communities have been recognizing their crossing guards the past 5 days.

Since 1979, the Merrill Police Department has utilized adult crossing guards to assist school children in crossing streets on their way to and from Merrill area schools.

According to the department, “These individuals provide this important service in any kind of weather imaginable. They diligently hold their posts through heat, thunderstorms, driving rain, frigid wind, and snow. And yet, they continue to ensure our kids get to and from school safely and without complaint.”

This year, Crossing Guard Debra Hartwig is especially recognized for serving on her post for 10 years.

In addition to Hartwig, the Merrill Police Department thanks Gary Boes, Don Norman, and Rich Dabbert.
