Special Olympics Coach Bonnie Kahn of Tomahawk continues to send us updates on the team and their experiences from South Korea.
After some cancellations late last week due to weather conditions, competitions have been underway throughout the weekend. Daina Shilts of Neillsville has had a successful showing in the snowboarding competitions. Shilts has a pair of silver medals in the giant slalom.
Coach Kahn also relayed the story of Bryan Terry of Colorado. He was participating in the Cross Country 5k and became a shining moment of the games. Going into the final lap Terry was in last place when he and a Russian competitor collided. He got back up and continued, broken pole and all.
At the end of the race, the final stretch is broadcast into the stadium where they finish. Terry, still in last place, took a nasty spill due to icy conditions. With the stadium crowd watching, he got up and completed the race, to wild cheering. Coach Kahn couldn’t even describe the emotions in the stand, saying he became the unsung hero and instant celebrity.
The 2013 games in Pyeongchang wrap up tomorrow with final competitions and closing ceremonies.
