Thousands of hockey players from around the world will converge in Northern Wisconsin this weekend to play hockey outdoors.
Eagle River will once again host the National Pond Hockey Championships which kicks off this morning. The eighth annual event will feature a record 341 teams and more than 2,400 players according to co-organizer USA Hockey.
The games are played on a small rink; 4 on 4 with no goalies. This year there are 18 divisions include 4 women’s divisions. The games will be played on Dollar Lake in Eagle River where a record 28 rinks have been created over the past several weeks.
The inaugural event in 2006 included just 40 teams and 240 players.
