Some of the best ice fishers are in Wausau this weekend for the World Ice Fishing Championships.
The United States Freshwater Fishing Federation and City of Wausau will be hosting the 10th World Ice Fishing Championship this weekend. The event will take place on the Big Eau Pleine Reservoir.
Team USA, the 2010 WIFC winner, will be competing against 12 international teams from across Europe and Asia. The field includes last year’s winner Belarus and other recent champions from Ukraine and two time winner Russia. New to the competition this year is Mongolia, fielding a team for the first time in their country’s history.
Each country puts out its top five ‘fishers’ with one in each designated area, and they go head to head during a three-hour period. No electronics or power augers are allowed. The fishers race on foot from spot to spot, drilling holes with hand augers.
