Governor Scott Walker is expected to sign a polarizing mining bill this afternoon in the Northwoods.
Governor Walker is making several stops throughout the day, including his first in Rhinelander this afternoon. He will be at Oldenburg Group Inc. where he will officially sign the legislation into law.
Variations of the mining bill have been on legislator’s minds the past several years. It is part of an effort to streamline the mine permitting process. Supporters hope this would lead to Gogebic Taconite placing an iron ore mine in the Penokee Hills region.
Opponents have insisted that this legislation will ease environmental regulations. The bill passed on a Republican lead, nearly party line vote. Area legislators, Tom Tiffany and Mary Czaja both supported the measure.
In addition to the official Rhinelander signing, Gov. Walker will also have a ceremonial signing in Milwaukee. Several opponents of the bill have already expressed they will file objections.
