Lincoln County has taken another step towards expanding the existing landfill.
After some debate last night at their meeting the full board approved the local siting agreement for the North expansion of the landfill with a 16-2 vote.
That agreement with the Townships of Merrill and Birch includes a payment at just under $16,700 per year of the course of 16 years starting in 2014.
Rough estimates by Manager Dan Miller suggested the current landfill has around 2.5 years of capacity left. He also explained the process in starting to use the expansion. When asked about comparable, he did offer that the cost between various counties and host communities differs due to various items in each specific agreement.
While there was concern from board members about the large increase, up from ~$600 per year, members of the solid waste committee say it was a long negotiation with the townships and in a negotiation you have to give and take. They estimated that going to mediation or even arbitration could wind up costly and time consuming while coming to a similar result.
In addition to the host fee payments, the county will contribute to reimbursement of expenses to the Local Siting Committee up to $20,000, financed by operating revenues.
