The Tomahawk School District is set to name their first Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.
Dr. Carl R. Eklund has been recommended by the distinguished alumni award committee for the inaugural honor.
Dr. Eklund was a 1927 graduate of Tomahawk High School. He went on to earn bachelor’s degrees in biology and education at Carleton College, a masters in Fish and Wildlife Management at Oregon State and his doctorate at the Maryland.
Eklund was the first Tomahawk graduate to earn a PhD. He participated on Admiral Richard Byrd’s 3rd Antarctic expedition, where he charted 350 miles of coastline as part of a dogsled journey. The Eklund Islands off of Antarctica were named in his honor.
Upon approval at tonight’s School Board Meeting, Dr. Eklund will be honored June 2 as part of the High School Commencement Ceremony.
