The Tomahawk School Board officially approved the recommendation of the inaugural THS Distinguished Alumni Award Honoree.
As we told you yesterday, 1927 graduate, Dr. Carl Eklund was nominated by a selection committee to receive the first honor. He was the first documented THS grad to receive a PhD. He is also known for his work in Antarctica, making an expedition with Admiral Richard Byrd.
District Administrator Roger Rindo said they received 8 nominations the first time out, which he though was good considering the high quality of the nominees. He also said when discussing the award that the graduates success proves,”Just because you come from a small town doesn’t mean you can’t think big.”
Rindo also said the district has been in touch with Eklund’s family members who now live out of state. They believe that his daughter is likely to attend the Tomahawk High School commencement in June where Eklund will be officially recognized.
The district also plans to recognize Eklund with a plaque and also a book containing him and future recipients that will go into the library.
