The 47th Wisconsin State Show Ski Championships gets underway today at Lake Wazeecha in Wisconsin Rapids featuring 26 teams including some from here in the Northwoods.
Both the Kwahamots from Tomahawk and the Min-Aquabats of Minocqua will be skiing in the team competition today. Other northwoods teams include the Chain Skimmers from Conover and Plum Ski-ters from Sayner. Each of these teams are competing in the Division III category.
In competitive show skiing, each club has one hour to present a theatrical performance on water skis. Judges score the acts by awarding points based on execution, difficulty, spectator appeal and flow. Elaborate costumes and staging intermix with music and fast action on the water as an announcer leads the audience through the show.
The Wisconsin State Show Ski Championships also features athletes competing individually in adagio doubles, swivel, freestyle jumping and multi-jumping acts.
The Min-Aquabats are actually the first team to hit the water today following the individual events. The Kwahamots are scheduled to ski second of the eight teams.
