The Merrill Police Department will begin the process of developing a canine unit after receiving a significant contribution.
The department announced yesterday that it has received a grant from the Bierman Family Foundation, earmarked towards the city’s first canine unit.
In the announcement officials said, “The Bierman Family Foundation recognizes the value of a canine to the community and to the Merrill Police Department. The canine will provide another valuable tool to law enforcement in the City of Merrill to keep the community safe and maintain a quality of life expected by citizens.”
The Merrill Police Department says the canine unit will require continued community support in order to sustain itself for the future. With additional community support, the Merrill Police canine can exist and function without using taxpayer dollars or additional staff.
Here in Tomahawk, the Police Department established a new K-9 unit earlier this year. They also raised money through community donations. K-9 Vali joined the force back in May.
