Drivers passing through Wausau will need to put down their cell phones.
Last night the Wausau City Council passed an ordinance that bans drivers from using cell phones and other mobile electronic devices. Exemptions to the new rule include hands-free or bluetooth devices.
The measure passed unanimously in the council after being sent from the public health and safety committee where it also cleared without opposition.
Once the ordinance takes effect in the coming days, violators will face a $40 fine. Leaders anticipate that the surrounding communities in the Greater Wausau area could follow suit and pass similar measures to ensure consistency across that area.
The measure is part of a growing trend of decreasing distracted driving. Statewide it is illegal for driver’s with a probationary license to talk on a cell phone while driving. It is also illegal in Wisconsin to text and drive.
