More than 1,200 musky anglers converged in Eagle River this weekend for the largest amateur musky tournament in the country.
This is the 29th year the Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and the Musky Clubs Alliance of Wisconsin have hosted the National Championship Musky Open on the seven lake families in the Eagle River area.
The Catch and Release tournament also serves as a benefit for the “Help Fight Hunger” program. This year more than 3,300 pounds of food and $1,500 in cash was collected for the Vilas County Food Pantry.
But back to the fishing, this year those anglers caught and released 197 muskies. Sean Kopke of Appleton landed 4 muskies to be declared the overall winner. Trevor Hake of Jefferson, WI landed the largest at just over 48 inches. This year’s 2014 Ranger tournament boat winner was Jim Tustison of Crown Point, IN.
Planning for next year’s event is underway, and organizers say they may have some special ideas for the 30th anniversary.
