Diggers Hotline and Miss Dig are a joint effort in Wisconsin and Michigan designed to keep everyone safe. With a simple phone call, utility locate specialists will come to your home, locate and mark all underground utility services in your yard free of charge.

At least three working days are required for locates prior to beginning a digging project. Calling 8-1-1 is a state law, according to WPS. It requires notifying Diggers Hotline or Miss Dig before you excavate, grade, trench, dig, drill, auger, tunnel, scrape or plow.

WPS responds to more than 400 cases of excavation damage to gas and electric underground facilities per year. In fact, nationwide, a utility line is damaged once every three minutes and one-third of these incidents are caused by failure of the homeowner or professional excavator to call 8-1-1.

WPS has 7,800 miles of underground natural gas pipeline and 6,000 miles of underground electrical line in 19 northeastern and north central Wisconsin counties and a small portion of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. So make sure before you start a project, call 8-1-1 or you can visit diggershotline.com and fill out a request electronically.

The graduates recently completed the Supporting Onboarding and Rentention of Rural Nurses or SOAR-RN program. Provided through a partnership among academic and rural practice partners, SOAR-RN is designed to ease new nurses’ transition to practice and acquire the knowledge and skills to autonomously deliver quality care in rural hospitals.

By providing training programs for preceptors and a rural-specific nursing curriculum, new nurses are provided with the necessary psycho-social and professional development/educational supports to meet the role challenges of rural nursing practice

Ministry Health Care is one of three health care partners in the nation selected to participate in the project to create an evidence-based rural nurse residency program.

Speakers with clinical expertise present twelve monthly learning sessions organized around a curriculum that builds on nurses’ pre-license education, but it is specific to rural nursing practice. The primary goal of the curriculum is to build nurse residents’ capacity for critical-thinking and to provide effective care. Therefore, topics of the learning sessions are based on building nurse residents’ personal competence, practice knowledge and their ability to function as a member of the team, within the organization, and as a member of the profession.

Emergency crews responded to an ATV trail east of County Road B in the Town of Harrison. This morning officials identified the victim as 49 year old Randy J. Romenesko.

They say he lost control of the ATV causing it to hit a tree. He was transported to Ministry Good Samaritan Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Officials say he was wearing a helmet, but it was not properly secured. Speed appears to be a main contributing factor for the crash.

The ATV trail in Lincoln County had just opened the previous day.

A Deputy was traveling near Tomahawk on US Hwy 51 near County Rd S at just after 7:00 PM. For safety reasons the Deputy did not continue pursuit.

A short time later a Deputy observed a similar motorcycle near the Highway 64 exit. He also tried to stop the bike but the chase once again resulted with speeds in excess of 100 mph and the deputy once again halted pursuit.

A Lincoln County woman became a victim of a scam, but an area bank stopped it from being a complete loss.

The victim was contacted on the phone by a subject who told her she won the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, but in order to claim her prize she needed to send in $3500 to pay for processing and handling. When the suspect learned she had mailed a check he started asking for additional money which the woman also sent.

The woman told her daughter about the winning, the daughter was able to contact the bank which put stops on the check and money order. Unfortunately a pair of money cards had already been spent.

Residents are reminded to educate their elderly relatives and friends about scams of this nature. These criminals often tell victims not to tell anyone about the prize . The general rule is you can never win a contest you did not enter and any legitimate prize will not require you to pay for it in advance.

A 54 year old Merrill man was arrested Monday evening. Deputies responded to a possible fight at a location on State Rd 64. The man arrived at the residence un-invited and caused problems including becoming physical with the victim. He was taken into custody on charges of disorderly conduct and battery. After spending the night in the jail, he was released on a signature bond Tuesday.

A 33 year old Tripoli man was taken into custody after a 2 car crash Wednesday morning in the Town of Bradley. According to the Deputies the man, traveling on Highway 8, struck the rear of a vehicle that had stopped to turn. The man said he was adjusting his radio at the time of the crash and did not see the vehicle stopping. The deputy asked the man to perform field sobriety tests after noting signs of intoxicants. As a result he was taken into custody for a first offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He will also be cited for operating after suspension, inattentive driving, driving without insurance and altering a license plate sticker.

A 29 year old Tomahawk woman was arrested Thursday on a Lincoln County warrant after a Deputy found her at a Town of Bradley home. She was wanted on misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. She was located Thursday afternoon at a residence on Peaceful Valley Rd. She was held overnight in the Lincoln County Jail for a bond hearing Friday and later released.

A 19 year old Merrill woman is in the Lincoln County Jail after a battery complaint in the Town of Pine River. A resident on Center Rd reported just after 3:00 AM Saturday that 4 people arrived at her house and committed a battery to her adult son. Three suspects were located a short time later. Two males denied involvement and implicated two 19 year old Merrill women. A short time later one of the women was located and taken into custody. She was arrested on charges of battery, disorderly conduct, criminal damage to property, and criminal trespass to a dwelling. According to the Deputies report the second 19 will have identical charges sent to the District Attorney for the incident.

A 24 year old Merrill man was arrested early Sunday morning on a criminal traffic charge. A Deputy saw a vehicle leave a gas station on East Main Street at a high rate of speed just after midnight. When he ran a check on the license plate he noted the vehicle did not match the information on file with DOT. A traffic stop was conducted and the man was asked to perform field sobriety tests. As a result of those tests he was taken into custody on a second offense charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was brought to the jail and also cited for operating after revocation and non-registration.
