Local Sports Notes

 

The Hatchet Volleyball program will hold their summer volleyball camps July 20, 21, 22, and 23 at the Fieldhouse.  The Volley Tots program for ages 3 to Grade 1 will be from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, and Grades 2 and 3 from 12:30 to 2:00 PM.

The Mini Volleyball Camp will be from 10:30 to Noon for grades 4 through 6, and the Volleyball Skills Camp for grades 7 though 9 will be from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. 

The cost is $35.00 per camper for four days of instruction and either a camp T-shirt or volleyball.  Camp brochures are available here: Camp Brochure or call Coach Pfannerstill at 715-493-0374.

 

The 23rd annual Sacred Heart Hospital Foundation Golf Outing will be held on Sunday, July 26 at the Edgewater Country Club of Tomahawk.  The event includes a steak dinner, beverages during the game and prizes throughout the afternoon.  The format is now this year; a four-person nine hole scramble.  All players hit the ball, choose best shot and all players play from that spot.  A shotgun start will begin at 2:00 PM, with registration from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.  The entry fee is $45.00 per person and forms are available at Sacred Heart Hospital, WJJQ or Edgewater.



THS Boys & Girls Track & Field

          The Tomahawk Hatchet Boys & Girls Track and Field Teams qualified a record number of events for the WIAA State Track and Field Meet in LaCrosse on Friday and Saturday.

          The lady Hatchet 800 meter relay team of Kellan Flynn, Emily Miller, Anna Sudbury and Brianna Weyers placed fifth in the finals at 1:47.60 to make the podium. 

          Sudbury finished ninth in the triple jump, and Nikolene Miller was 11th in the discus.

          Tomahawk’s girls 400 meter relay team was ninth and their 3200 meter relay team was 15th.

          On the boys side, Andy Murphy was 14th overall in the 110 meter high hurdles, Matt Gerber was 15th in the 100 meter dash and Nick Van Strydonk was 11th in the 3200 meter run.  The Hatchet boys 3200 meter relay team was 13th.

THS Softball

The Tomahawk Hatchet Softball Team lost to the Mosinee Indians on Thursday afternoon in WIAA Regional Semi Final action, 3-1.

The Indians scored all three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Tomahawk scored their lone run in the top of six on an RBI single from Kendall Nelson.

With the loss, Tomahawk’s 2009 season comes to an end with an 11-13 record.

The Tomahawk Hatchet Baseball Team lost to Nekoosa 4-2 on Wednesday afternoon in WIAA Regional Final action.

The Hatchets end the regular season with a 13-15 record, and an 8-4 Great Northern Conference record.

THS Golf

          The Tomahawk Hatchet Golf Team finished fifth in the WIAA Regional on Tuesday at the Inshalla Country Club.

          Advancing to the sectional meet are Notre Dame, Oconto Falls, Wittenberg-Birnamwood and Marinette.  The Hatchets were led by Troy Salewske with an 84, Mitch Paulson shot an 85, Ricky Lechleitner an 86 and Dave Twomey an 88.

THS Girls Basketball

            The Tomahawk Hatchet Girls Basketball Team lost to the Wittenberg-Birnamwood Chargers 92-25 on Tuesday night in WIAA Regional Quarter Final play.

          The Chargers led 18-5 after the first quarter, and 47-9 at the half.  The Chargers built their lead to 80-11 after three quarters.

          Kaitlyn Doughty led Tomahawk with 14 points.

          The Hatchets end the season at 2-19 overall and 0-12 in the GNC.

THS Boys Basketball

          The Tomahawk Hatchet Boys Basketball Team lost to Mosinee in the WIAA Regional Quarter Finals on Tuesday night, 52-46, ending their 2008-09 season with a 3-18 record.

          Jacob Jarvensivu and Tyler Jones both had 13 points, and Mike Anderson added nine.

THS Boys Hockey

          The Tomahawk Hatchet Boys Hockey Team lost 4-2 to the Lakeland T-Birds on Friday night in the WIAA Regional Final.

          The game was tied 1-1 after the first period of play, as Tomahawk’s goal came from Matt Sykes on an assist from Craig Swan.  Brandon Hakala was fantastic in the Hatchet net, stopping 22 shots.

          Following the second period, the game was tied 2-2, with Tomahawk’s Nathan Schoone scoring an unassisted goal.

          The T-Birds would score two unanswered goals in the third period to advance to sectional play, ending the Hatchets 2008-09 season.

          Brandon Hakala had 51 saves in the Hatchet net.

          The Hatchets end their 2008-09 season at 8-13-1.

THS Girls Hockey

          The Tomahawk Hatchet Girls Hockey Team lost to Northland Pines on Thursday night 7-1 in the WIAA playoffs.  Niki Maki scored the lone Hatchet goal.

          Kate Nelson had 47 saves in the Hatchet net.

          The Hatchets finish the 2008-2009 season with an 8-11 overall.

THS Wrestling

          The 2009 WIAA State Championships are being held at the Kohl Center in Madison this weekend. 

          On Friday, Zach Zehner, Rudy Chagoya and Nick Hagar all won their quarterfinal matches and advanced to the semifinals in Division Two.  The semis will begin at 7:00 pm, with coverage on WJJQ-FM with Gregg Albert and Bob Lee. 

On Thursday night, Jordan McAllister lost in the preliminaries.  McAllister lost to Ryan Miesbauer in a third period pin.  McAllister’s 2008-09 season comes to an end.

THS Boys Swimming

            The Tomahawk Hatchet Boys Swimming Team finished tenth at the WIAA Sectional Meet on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point.

          Tomahawk had a seventh place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, and an eighth place finish in the 200 medley relay.

THS Football

            The Tomahawk Hatchets lost to the Mosinee Indians 54-6 on Thursday night in the regular season finale.

          Mike Lafevre scored tomahawk’s lone touchdown on a 78 yard run.

          Mosinee out gained Tomahawk 400 to 159.

          Tomahawk ends the season with at 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the GNC.

THS Cross Country

           

            The Tomahawk Hatchet Boys Cross Country Team won their second state championship in school history on Saturday, winning the 2008 WIAA Division Two Championship at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.  The Hatchets finished first with 78 points, followed by Catholic Memorial with 88 points and Port Washington was third with 89 points.

          The Hatchet boys were led by Nick VanStrydonk’s 11th place finish.  Cody Lemke was 22nd, Nathan Kainz was 23rd, Sam Arnott was 49th, Nick Glaeser was 55th, Tyler Bostwick was 66th, and Nick Hagar was 74th. 

          The 1977 Hatchet squad coached by Gordy Erickson won the previous state championship.

Division Two Boys Team & Individual Results

          The Tomahawk Hatchet Girls Cross Country Team finished seventh at the 2008 WIAA State Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.  Mount Horeb/Barneveld won the Division Two Girls Title, with Dodgeville/Mineral Point finishing second and Pewaukee third.

          The Lady Hatchets were led by freshman Rachel Sudbury’s 17th place finish.  Michelle Kuber was 56th, Rachael Miller was 91st, Kelsey Renn was 93rd, Taylor Laack was 108th, Regan Swan was 118th, and Sara Maday was 138th.

THS Volleyball

           

            The Tomahawk Hatchet Volleyball Team lost to Altoona on Friday night in the WIAA Regional Semi Final three games to none.

          The Hatchets finished third in the Great Northern Conference behind Merrill and Medford and finished the season 29-10, including a 15 match winning streak.
