Midwest Freeze this week
Monday, December 26, 2011
Thousands are expected to converge in
central Wisconsin for a hockey tournament, and with it aide local businesses.
The third annual Midwest Freeze begins Thursday, and
organizers believe it will bring $1 million in impact to the local economy. The
Convention and Visitor's bureau says the people don't just watch hockey, and
that some are coming early to ski.
The tournament has over 50 youth teams from Wisconsin, Iowa,
Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan. With that many teams each having 10-15
players, and their parents, Organizer Richard Barrett says they will pack local
hotels and stores. Those teams will compete in Stevens
Point, Mosinee, Everest and at Marathon Park in
Wausau.
In addition to the youth hockey tournament, the Midwest
Freeze is also hosting the Big Chill adult pond hockey tournament over January
13-15 on Sunny Vale Lake in Wausau.
