State Mitten Debate Collection

Wednesday, December 28, 2011

A debate about which state looks more like a mitten has turned into a state-wide drive for charity.

Both Wisconsinites and Michiganders use their hand in a mitten shape to describe where in the state they live. Now Travel Wisconsin has partnered with Pure Michigan to create "The Great Lakes Mitten Campaign." Everyone in both states are encouraged to "shake hands" and come together to collect mittens for those in need.

The Tomahawk Chamber has decided to join in on the cause. From now until January 15th, The Tomahawk Chamber of Commerce will be collecting mittens in their office to donate to the the Friends program at the Tomahawk School District, Kinship and the Salvation Army. They ask to help keep children's hands warm this winter. The Tomahawk Chamber office is open Monday Thru Friday 8am-4pm. Other area drop-offs include the Rhinelander Chamber and the Wausau Visitor's Bureau.

"There has been a lot of national excitement surrounding the debate over whether Wisconsin or Michigan looks more like a mitten," Governor Scott Walker said. "Our Pure Michigan friends have agreed to join us in taking all of this attention and turning it into something positive.  We encourage everyone in both states to 'shake hands' and donate mittens to help make this winter a bit warmer for those in need."

Wisconsin Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett said, "Our tourism partners around the state are very excited to jump in and lend a hand in this initiative." She went on to encourage residents to donate their new or gently used mittens for this good cause.
