State snowmobile clubs urge safety
Friday, December 30, 2011
The association of Wisconsin
Snowmobile Clubs or AWSC is continuing its efforts to promote safe and
responsible snowmobiling.
The group is encouraging riders to
participate in safety courses available statewide. This year saw snowmobile
registration increase 5% and mileage 10% over last year. President Doug Johnson
says, "As more people hit the trails and spend increased time out there,
we want to do all we can to ensure everyone has a safe ride."
The AWSC would like all riders to
learn basic safety features, responsibilities, ethics, laws and mechanical
functions associated with snowmobiling by attending a safety course. Upcoming
courses in our area include ones in Merrill and Medford starting Monday; in
Minocqua starting January 9; and in Arbor Vitae starting the 13th. For a
complete list of snowmobile safety courses check the Wisconsin DNR's website.
Snowmobile fatalities have declined
the past six years and Johnson believes that educational efforts and safety
courses are the key to making the total number zero. The AWSC also has a
website with plenty of snowmobile information for Wisconsin at www.AWSC.org. And a reminder that as
of noon today the majority of trails in Oneida County are open to snowmobilers.
