Poverty simulation scheduled for Tomahawk
Tuesday, January 3, 2012
Participants to an upcoming event in Tomahawk will learn what
it's like to live in poverty.
The Lincoln County UW-Extension will be running an
interactive poverty simulation. Several surrounding communities have recently
conducted similar seminars which have had a profound impact.
Lincoln County currently has an unemployment rate in the
upper half of the state and the county's FoodShare
participation is six times higher than just a decade ago. In addition, the
Salvation Army backpack program has seen an
increase in demand.
This event will assign participants a budget they have to
follow, while having to pay for everyday expenses and having to deal with
emergencies. In the end they will learn about the prevalence of poverty
in Lincoln County and develop an understanding of what its like to live on a limited income.
The simulation will take place on Saturday January 14th, but
early registration is sought by Wednesday. The three hour event will take
place at the Rodeway Inn with registration beginning
at 1. The cost is free, but seating is limited. Please call the Extension
office at (715)-539-1072.
