City of Tomahawk meeting recap
Wednesday, January 4, 2012
The Board of Public Works meeting began with a report from
Director Mike Tolvstad. He said that crews were busy
keeping the streets cleaned with a continuous cycle of putting sand down. He
said that the second significant snowfall led to just over 50 notices put into
doors for sidewalk shoveling. Most of the previous notices
lead to compliance.
In updating the streetlights, Tolvstad
said crews will be testing light readings on South Tomahawk and Wisconsin
Avenue. They will also test with some lights missing to discover why some areas
appear to be brighter.
Much of the meeting was spent discussing the snow shoveling
on South Tomahawk Avenue. Several property owners were issued citations for not
removing snow from the sidewalks, despite a previous exemption. The exemption lead to inconsistencies in the city as people in similar areas are
still required to remove the snow. The board decided to drop the issued
citations, and those property owners would be contacted and informed that they
would be required to comply with the snow removal.
In the License and Permits committee, they first approved an
operator license to Keari Webie.
The committee also tossed around ideas as they continue to move forward on
updating the code on animals. Some items mentioned included additional no-leash
areas in the city and the definitions of what animals are actually included in
the ordinance. With more work to be done the committee scheduled a special
meeting for the 19, with anticipation of moving it to the council at the
February meeting. There was nothing discussed on the Peddlers and solicitors
ordinance.
The Finance committee met for a short time to approve checks
and look over the financial report with minimal discussion.
The Council meeting began with a pair of appointments for two
board seats. The council approved Steve Mitchell to the Library Board. Mitchell
was chosen from 3 or 4 very good candidates according to Mayor Bob Lee. Mary Czaja was also named to the Police and Fire Commission,
where her skills and qualities would be a good addition to the commission. The
council acknowledged a report from Tomahawk Main Street, and Tolvstad briefly recapped the Public Works. Finally Mayor
Lee gave a special thank you on behalf of himself and the council to Loretta Wanta for the extra work she has put in at the end of the
year at city hall.
