Mining hearing in Hurley next week
Thursday, January 5, 2012
Northern Wisconsin residents will now have an opportunity to
weigh in on mining legislation.
Assembly Republicans previously faced criticism for holding
their only public hearing near Milwaukee in southern Wisconsin. The proposed
iron ore mine site is in Ashland and Iron Counties, hundreds of miles away.
The legislation is designed to
streamline the approval process for that project. The Assembly jobs committee
will hold the hearing on the bill next Wednesday in Hurley.
The hearing will take place just a
few days after Democrats hold their own unofficial meeting on the bill in
Ashland, which organizers says was needed because Republicans were showing no
interest in the views of northern Wisconsin.
The Assembly is expected to begin
debating the bill when members return to Madison later this month.
