Monday, January 9, 2012

Authorities found the body of a man whose car broke through the ice near Mosinee over the weekend.

The car occupied by two Stratford men went through the ice on Saturday Evening near Halder Bridge on the Wisconsin River. One man escaped from the vehicle when it broke through. Authorities continued to look Saturday evening before putting the search on hold until yesterday. They resumed the search once more light was available, and his body was recovered after nearly 20 hours.

Marathon County officials have not said who which man was driving at the time. The two men had been ice fishing during the day on Saturday.

Authorities warned people that they need to be careful on the ice, especially after the recent warm spell. Areas that may have previously been safe may no longer be.
