Merrill Fire Department responds to two fires

The Merrill Fire Department responded to pair of small fires yesterday.

The first call occurred at around 1 yesterday afternoon at a home on Grand Avenue.

A cast iron skillet with oil in it caught fire while the stove was being cleaned. The fire was contained to the stove and caused minor smoke damage in the kitchen.

At about 7 pm., firefighters responded to a 911 call for a semitrailer that was on fire on Highway 51, just north of Merrill. Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which began in the semi's brakes, before it reached the truck's cab or trailer.
