Ginseng farmers in Lincoln County get
disaster status
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Ginseng farmers in both Lincoln and Marathon
Counties have been granted disaster status.
Officials from the US Agricultural Department
granted that status after major crop damage to those farms last year.
The designation will help farmers recoup their
losses through loans and grants available under disaster status. A statement
from Governor Scott Walker's office said, "Giving farmers access to
capital to manage the losses experienced last year will not only help the
agricultural economy, but also the local communities as well."
In addition to Lincoln and Marathon Counties, the
surrounding counties including Langlade, Oneida, and Price counties will be
granted the designation of contiguous disaster counties.
Farmers will have 8 months to claim loans
available to them, and can get more information on the process by contacting
the local Farm Service Agency.
