Eagle River cancels ice castle
Thursday, January 12, 2012
Due to the weather, Eagle River's Ice Castle will be put off
for this year.
The fortress has been built by hand since the 1920's with ice
harvested from Silver Lake. The weather occasionally has not cooperated in the
past preventing the castle's construction.
The Eagle River Fire Department says this year the ice is too
thin and unsafe for the cutting operations and trucks to work. They usually
harvest more than 2,000 blocks for the project.
Fire Chief Pat Weber says the prime time for construction
passed and now the department is preparing for the Snowmobile Derby and the US
Pond Hockey Championships.
