City of Tomahawk meetings

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Last night's meetings began with Public Works and a report from Director Mike Tolvstad. He mentioned that some of the cracks will be tarred coming up this week. In his 4th street update he said the light poles should all be assembled and will start going up quickly. It should be around a week long project. Each light will be individually programmable. Initially, the lights will run at 100% until 10:00pm then drop to 60% power. The intersection lights will remain at full power throughout the night. He said that they will plant half the trees this fall and the remaining next spring.

The board also discussed the 5 year streets improvement plan, which is specifically described as a living document that will be reviewed and adjusted. This year on the list were Kaphaem Road, Chandler Street, Pheifer Road and Wilson Street. For next year, they recommended delaying the 4th Street project, from Some Ave to River until possibly 2015. In the plan for next year would be Cash Road and parts of Mohawk, both of which were used heavily during detours.

They also continue to work on the permit parking only spots in the municipal parking lot. It was recommended to initially have 6 spots designated, with fees of $15 for 7 days and $30 for 30 days.

The Finance Committee met and approved their normal business. They also approved Tomahawk Dairy Queen's purchase of a small piece of property adjacent to their own. The finance committee recommended the price as the same per square foot that they paid when purchasing land from Dairy Queen to complete the Riverwalk.

The License and Permits Committee approved the annual Christmas Parade and Winter Wonderland for November 26. Police Chief Don Johnson issued his Fall Ride Review, which he described as a good year. The service calls were down, only two crashes with no injuries and no OWI's. The stepped up compliance checks also resulted in 10 unregistered vendors and 2 under registered. The committee then discussed a few ideas about improving some problem areas, such as the portable restrooms and the garbage receptacles.

In the Council meeting, the mayor gave his report. He talked about having 3rd graders from the elementary school visiting city hall. He also commended all those filling in at city hall for the past couple of weeks. He also touched on the recycling program going well.

The council approved 2010-2012 salary ordinance, with one minor amendment about how four positions are listed. There was no action taken on the other ordinance. There was also a brief discussion on the concealed carry law going into effect next month. A couple of members of the Parks and Finance committees may be chosen to looking into the city's policy.
