Point professor won’t face charges in Lincoln
County
Friday, February 3, 2012
The Stevens Point professor accused
of punching a student in the face last summer will not face criminal charges.
Lincoln County District Attorney Don Dunphy said he didn't think there was sufficient evidence
to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Meghan Buckley struck Wesley Shaw last
summer.
The incident happened in July near
Harrison. Buckley allegedly struck Shaw in the face because he continued to
clap when Buckley returned to the bus after getting some of the final, missing
students.
Dunphy said that technically there was a
basis for charges, but added that the victim waited 4 months to report the
incident.
Shaw said the incident happened on
the second day of a six-week camp and he waited to report the incident because
he "didn't know what the teachers would do." He said it was a
scenario where he said he had a lot at risk.
Buckley has already submitted her
resignation to UWSP, which will become effective May 27. Since that time she
has been re-assigned to non-classroom duties for the remainder of the school
year.
