WSCD will sell BSG
Winter Games
Tuesday, September 27, 2011
Organizers of the Badger State Games
will sell the winter games to Wausau's convention and visitors
bureau but plan to work with other communities to host the summer games.
A Wisconsin Sports Development Corp. board member declined to
discuss specifics of the negotiations. But “said they were
interested in dealing with people in the Wausau and the Marathon County area
about bringing and maintaining the livelihood of the winter games.”
The WSDC plans to “fast track” a decision regarding the
future of the winter games and plans to hold a meeting of the board's executive
committee by Friday.
The local visitors bureau had
offered to buy both competitions from the Corporation, which ended the games
this summer because of fewer athletes, declining sponsorship and a growing
number of other sports competitions. Other communities have a rich tradition of
hosting the summer games, such as the Fox Valley and the corporation will work
with those communities on the summer games.
