Nicolet gets AmeriCorps/VISTA Coordinator
Tuesday, October 11, 2011
Students at Nicolet College will have greater access to service
learning opportunities thanks to the new AmeriCorps/VISTA coordinator working
out of the Rhinelander campus.
Chris Meier began work this fall in the new Nicolet College Center
for Community engagement which is designed to connect Nicolet students with
area community groups for service learning projects.
Many courses at Nicolet have service learning requirements where
students engage in meaningful civic projects that present students with
significant learning opportunities.
Meier says, "Students benefit by learning new skills...our
communities benefit as a whole from the work completed by these
partnerships."
He went on to say that only certain projects qualify. The key
component is that the project must offer the opportunity for student learning,
which he says is the difference between community service and service learning.
Meier's position is funded through the AmeriCorps VISTA/Wisconsin
Campus Compact. He previously was an English teacher in the Phelps School
District.
