District administrator Roger Rindo gave his administrator
report and the financial report. He said there was a flat revenue for the
month, which was not unexpected. Once more information is finalized they will have
their Final Levy, possibly by the end of the month. At the in-service day
participants were able to choose 2 of 7 offerings put on by skilled staff
members. The offerings will be ongoing. They will continue with follow-ups of
tech implementation at the schools. The goal is to see how it is being used in
the classroom, and they will check again at the end of the year. He also said
they recently participated in a video conferencing session, with 10 other
schools around the state. Rindo described the interaction using the technology
as just "getting their toes wet."
The Middle School will be heading to Trees for Tomorrow in
two groups for their annual trip today through Friday. The Renaissance program
is looking into implementing a teacher of the month program, and also staff of
the month.
In the High School Principal Scott Swenty discussed the
technology being used by the high school Spanish class to communicate with
their sister school in Mexico. He also talked about the Friends Program which
pairs high school students with middle or elementary students. They began with
a goal of 20 pairs; They already have 36 and are growing. The recent Dig Pink
promotion with the Volleyball team raised $2,200.
Dan Maguire said he and other staff recently served 165 sundaes
for students that exceeded their reading goals for the summer. The elementary
student council is working on a pet food drive.
The board approved the Special Olympic Bowling trip to Eau
Claire, the 6th graders to Trees for Tomorrow and the Middle School Band to
Washington DC.
They discussed the results of the ACT scores, where
Tomahawk's 10 year average was 130 out of 439 schools in Wisconsin. They are
coming in at slightly above the state average. They also discussed the lower
reading and English scores, compared to higher scores in math and science.
After a brief presentation from Baird, the board approved a
resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of not to exceed $6 million in
general obligation refunding bonds. She said that Tomahawk received a higher
than anticipated credit score from S&P which would lead to a better
interest rate, however a change in the treasury note rate would offset that.
The rating was a AA- and was based on District finances, low debt levels and
fiscal policies.
Finally the board discussed building developments for the
future. The more immediate change would be fixing the sidewalk area in the main
entry way near the High School Library. The other which was just going over
ideas for something down the road was fixing the intersection coming on to
school property.
