Badger States Games return official
Tuesday, October 18, 2011
Following
weeks of negotiations, the Badger State games will officially be returning.
The Wisconsin Sports
Development Cooperation agreed to sell the rights to both the winter and summer
games to the Wausau-Central Wisconsin Convention and visitors Bureau in a deal
announced yesterday.
The bureau will invest
$5,000 in athlete scholarships in each of the next three years to cover the
$15,000 sale price. The Wisconsin Sports Foundation along with Ministry Health
care will combine to pay the first $5,000.
Athletes can begin
registering in November for the winter games, which will take place the first
week in February in the Wausau area.
The summer games will
remain in the Fox Cities for the foreseeable future, but the Wausau Bureau will
handle the marketing and registration.
The sports Development
Corporation had looked into selling the summer games elsewhere but decided it
made more sense to package it to one location. That package includes the
trademark, website and databases for marketing and registration.
