Merrill postpones fire station decision

Thursday, October 20, 2011

City of Merrill leaders in a special meeting last night postponed action on a measure that would shut down one of Merrill’s two fire stations.

Merrill leaders are considering shutting Fire Station 2 and building an addition to Fire Station 1. Mayor Bill Bialecki said at the meeting that the city would partly fund the up to $500,000 addition with grant money and money from the sale of Station 2.

Prior to the meeting,Assistant Fire Chief Josh Klug, who opposes the sale said that "adding on to station 1 is like putting a band-aid on an amputated finger. It just doesn't make sense."

Council members were scheduled to authorize officials to seek bids for the sale of the station on West Main Street. Council President Steve Hass motioned for the issue to be discussed further at a later time.
