Merrill may not have promised funds
Monday, September 12, 2011
The city of Merrill may not have the
money to cover a loan promised to Hurd Windows.
The city promised Hurd a $200,000
loan to build a new plant on Water St on June 29. The subsidiary, Super-Seal
Windows and Doors would create 50 new jobs in the community.
A Wausau Daily Herald report says that the city's economic
development fund is empty. City leaders may consider a tax finance district to
cover the loan but that would not be an immediate source of funds.
Hurd has not said whether the plan was contingent
on the funds.
There is also a question as to whether the city council
violated open meetings laws by agreeing to the loan in closed session without a
proper vote or record of the decision.
