City of Tomahawk meetings
Wednesday, September 14, 2011
In Tomahawk, the board of
Public Works began the evening's meetings. They first heard from
Director Mike Tolvstad. In his construction update he
said that all the lines are painted, they did a sweep yesterday to clean up the
glass marbles and debris and have finished a large portion of the signage. They
are just waiting until the streetlight comes in to finish those. They are
estimated to come September 19th and would take 3-4 weeks to install, although
a second crew may speed the process. Finally after a minor glitch, the traffic
lights are now up and working. He shot down the rumor floating around town about
the bridge closing, they just fixed up some paint and did some work on the
railings. They also removed their construction trailer.
The board approved a request for a streetlight on Wilson and
Putnam St. This was the only intersection in the French Town area without a
light. The pole and wires are already there. They approved a clean-up process
at 315 W. Rice Avenue, which was worked out by the mayor, the property owner,
and Tolvstad. They also discussed the parking
concerns on Comfort Dr. That road is not wide enough for parking on both sides,
and they will look into creating one side parking only. For the special event
of Fall Ride weekend, this will be done as a temporary measure.
The board will also begin the collection of data for traffic
on Main St. They are going to gather the data as part of an ongoing concern
over safe traffic balanced with being a pedestrian friendly downtown. Finally
they had a discussion with a planner about a county-wide All Hazards Mitigation
Plan.
The License and Permits committee approved 5
operator licenses. They also approved a cigarette license and a class B beer
and class C wine license to the Tomahawk Internet Cafe' and a class A
combination for Cygnet, Inc at 990 North Fourth Street. They approved premise
revisions for the Rodeway Inn and Freddy's Pub and
Grill for this coming weekend. They also approved the special events
application for the MDA fall ride after they came through with their security
plan.
The finance committee approved normal agenda
items. They also had a presentation from Mr. DeYoung
of Stifel, Nicolaus and
Company who discussed the authorizing of the issuance and sale of $4.4 million
in general obligation refunding bonds. He said that the city's A-Plus rating
was confirmed by S&P and that the city did well in the last budget. The
city's debt would be coming down considerably in the next few years. He also
said in this, the city did well with comparable communities.
Council
The city council held a public hearing and
then later in the meeting passed the 5 ordinances from the last meeting. A
brief summary of the five are an ordinance installing a fine to those who do
not clear snow from sidewalks, the creation of a longer than 24 hour parking
permit system for municipal lots, and one which would allow some city employees
the authority to issue non-moving violations or parking tickets. The other two
cleaned up some language from existing ordinances, including the change in
parking due to St. Mary's move.
The council approved the appointment of Mike Vannatter to the Economic Development Committee. In the
Mayor's report, he said that with the construction winding down, everything has
calmed. He, along with the rest of the council, continued to praise all those
involved in the construction from the city workers and construction crews to
the businesses.
The council approved the resolution authorizing the general
obligation refunding bonds as recommended by the Finance committee. They
approved the preliminary plat for 1000 E. Kings Rd into 3 lots and approved liquor
licenses as recommended by licenses and permits.
