The Tomahawk Hatchet Football Team opened their season on Friday night with a 35-0 victory over Auburndale in the opener.
Tomahawk led 21-0 at the half, with rushing touchdowns from Kaleb Kaminski and Dane Borchardt. Kaminsky also three a TD to Easton Phalin from 25 yards out.
The Hatchets added two more scores in the second half, on rushes from Kaminsky.
Tomahawk is 1-0 on the season and will host Pittsville on Friday night at 7:00 pm. Join the Big Q for the Fehrman Orthodontics Show at 6:35 pm on Northwoods 92-5.
On Saturday the Tomahawk Hatchet Cross-Country team hosted their 14th annual Alumni Scrimmage at Bradley Park. Nearly sixty athletes toed the line, including twenty former Hatchet alumni for annual bragging rights against the current Hatchets.
The 5000 meter men’s event featured a 1-2 finish for the alumni, as Connor Ahrens (class of 2011—currently a senior at UW-Stout) and Justin Lund (class of 2000) went 16:56 and 17:54 respectively to lead the veterans. Connor’s effort established a new 5K course record as he broke Aaron Whalen’s 2007 effort by 7 seconds. Other men’s alumni finishers were: Nick VanStrydonk (’09-4th), Simon Janeczko (’98-10th), Derek Tassler (’92-11th), Gary Buchanen (’75-16th), Bill Turgeon (’86-17th), Frank Hinterleitner (’69-24th), Chris VanStrydonk (’15-27th) and Roger Martens (TARA-31st).
The current Hatchets worked hard to offset the top alumni finishers they were led by senior Troy VanStrydonk’s 3rd place (18:19) effort and a solid pack of scoring runners in the top nine. This helped to inflate the unofficial alumni score to 28, while the locals finished with 29 points.
Alex Johnson (5th -20:01), Luca Tjugum (6th-20:07), Kyle Klopotek (7th-20:10), Cayton Scholz (8th-20:12), Mason Webster (9th-20:40) all had top 10 finishes. The following Hatchets were next across the line: Justin Jarvensivu (12th), Jakob Panzer (13th), Erik Zedler (14th), Evan Ploeckelman (15th), Josh Wick (18th), Jared Leverance (19th), Sam VonSchrader (20th), Daniel Hanke (21st), Brett Gerber (22nd), Luke Olson (23rd), Carl Theiler (25th), Nathan Goehe (26th), Kyle Theiler (28th), Blayden Conrad (29th), Cole Svacina (30th), and Billy Hurlburt (31st).
The women were led by former Hatchet Stephanie Welke (class of 2012—currently a junior at Gustavus-Adolphus). She covered the 5K course in a time of 22:04. The alumni team placed six runners in the top nine to top the Hatchets by an “unofficial” 22-35 margin. Other alumni finishers were: DeAnn Lange (’97-3rd), Talyn Jones (’15-4th) , Amanda Koshak (6th-’12), Heather Leverence (’91-8th), Teri Theiler (’88-9th), Emmy Larson (’15-14th), Joanne Lazore (TARA-16th), Shirley Derleth (’85-19th), and Leah Cotton (TARA-22nd) rounded out the alumni finishers. The lady Hatchets gave it a valiant effort placing five in the top eleven on the heels of senior Dani Whiting (2nd-22:52), Susan Waye (5th-24:17), Rylie Swan (7th-25:08), Kate Krueger (10th-25:38), and Maggee Renn (11th-26:20). Rounding out the finishers for the 2015 Hatchets were: Sara Kouba (12th), Lizebeth Edwardsen (13th), Lauryn Bauman (15th), Morgan Waye (17th), Brittany Jashinsky (18th), Jackie Wick (20th), and Michaela Hess (21st). A brat fry near the finish line was enjoyed by all following the race.
The Hatchets “open” the season on Thursday at the 17-team Ashland Invitational. Meet gets underway at 1:30 from Chequamegon Bay Golf Course on the west side of Ashland.
The Girls Swimming Team won the Hatchet Relay Meet on Tuesday, scoring 276 points. Rice Lake was second, Marshfield third and Merrill was fourth.
Tomahawk’s 200 freestyle relay team set a new meet record in the meet. Tomahawk also won the 850 yard freestyle relay, the 400 yard medley relay, the 200 yard backstroke relay, the breastroke relay, and the 400 yard freestyle relay.
Tomahawk will host Rhinelander in the GNC in the opener on Thursday, September 3 at 5:30 pm at the Tomahawk Swimming Pool.
The Tomahawk Hatchet Volleyball Team will compete in the UW-Whitewater Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
