The Hatchet Varsity Softball Team lost 5-0 in WIAA Regional Semi Final action on Tuesday at Mosinee.
Tomahawk ends their 2014 season with a 9-13 record.
Day #1 for the Tomahawk Hatchets ended late at the State Track & Field meet in La Crosse. The Division 2/3 athletes were greeted in the early afternoon by a 2+ hour rain and delay, which delayed the start of the meet until nearly 5:30. This didn’t dampen the Hatchets as they responded with three P.R.’s in the five events that they competed in.
Senior Bryan Tomek ran a career best time of 4:26, less than a second off of the school record in his 13th place finish in the field of 17.
The 400 meter relay team of Lauren Hilt, Emmy Larson, Emily Verkilen, and Hanna Meyer ran a seasonal best time of 51.60 (2nd fastest time in school history) as they placed 15th overall.
Earlier in the day Hanna competed in the trials of the 100 meter dash and ran a 13.18 in placing 15th in the trials. Hanna also competed in the trials of the long jump and had three scratches ending her event early.
Competing at nearly 10 p.m., in the final event for the Hatchets, sophomore Dani Whiting ran a career best time of 11:37.83 in placing 13th overall in the 3200 meter run.
After beginning Day #2 at the State Track & Field meet with a 5+ hour weather delay, the Tomahawk Hatchet Track & Field team featured two athletes. Sophomore Hanna Meyer provided the first points of the meet for Tomahawk as she leaped to a career best effort in the triple jump with her 35’8″ effort. She qualified in the 5th position going into the finals with a 34’7″ effort in the trials and then moved to the 32′ take-off board in the finals and added three outstanding jumps in the 35 foot range moving up one position on the podium to a fourth place finish. Her jump moved her into the #2 position all-time at Hatchet high with her effort as she surpassed recent grad Anna Sudbury’s 35’7″ 2009 effort and sits now only behind school record holder Allison Flynn (37’4″).
Finally, wrapping up the meet for Tomahawk was senior Bryan Tomek in the 3200 meter run. Running in his last race as a Hatchet under the lights of the UW-LaCrosse stadium, Bryan worked a solid first 1600 meters into a career best effort as he ran the third fastest time ever recorded at Tomahawk High with his 9:45 3200 meter effort. Bryan went into his final race seeded 15th and improved on his ranking with his 10th place overall finish. It was also special for Bryan as Coach Stanley (Cross-Country Coach and distance specialist from UW LaCrosse) was on track to see his performance. Bryan will be attending UW-LaCrosse in the fall and running for the Eagles.
All in all it was a solid weekend for Tomahawk at the State Track & Field Championships in LaCrosse as they recorded five out of seven career best efforts, improved school “Top Three” performances in four events, and were able to have one athlete on the podium for the first time since 2012.
