Road Construction Season Ahead, Work Zone Safety Awareness
Published on 04/16/2024 under News A handful of highway construction projects are already underway in our region with more to come. This week is dedicated to making sure the crews are safe on the job. Local Highway Departments will work with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and other partners to observe National Work Zone Awareness Week. The goal is to promote road worker safety and cautious driving in work zones. This year's theme is 'work zones are temporary, but actions behind the wheel can last forever.' DOT Secretary Craig Thompson,"This year's work zone safety theme is so poignant; it only takes a momentary distraction to create a deadly situation on the road," Last year, the DOT recorded more than 2,100 crashes in Wisconsin work zones, resulting in 9 deaths and 700 injuries. Speeding, tailgating and distracted driving are listed as common factors in a majority of crashes. Thompson says, "We must recommit to safe driving, especially in work zones – slow down, be patient and avoid distractions." As part of the campaign, they are encouraging people to wear orange tomorrow for "Go Orange Wednesday." On Friday, there will be a national moment of silence for those who lost their lives in workzone accidents.

Flambeau River YMCA Names First Executive Director
Published on 04/16/2024 under News Construction on the new Flambeau River YCMA in Park Falls is right around the corner. Now the facility has tabbed it's first executive director. Park Falls native Scott Schultz will serve in that leadership role, overseeing the project during the next stages. Schultz actually has previous experience with the YMCA. While living in southeastern Wisconsin, he worked in leadership positions at their branches in Waukesha County and Metropolitan Milwaukee. He returned to the Northwoods back in 2019. He said, "I've been among the many people cheering on the development of the Flambeau River YMCA in my hometown. To have the opportunity to serve as its first executive director is a true honor." The YMCA has been working in collaboration with the City of Park Falls on this project. Schultz is actually moving from his current position as parks and recreation director in the coming weeks. Parks Falls Mayor Tara Tervort said, "One of our main goals with creating the park and recreation position was to establish community involvement and recreational activities in the area. The new opportunity of partnering with the YMCA fills this void and opens new programs the city wouldn't have the means to produce." The Flambeau River YMCA will incorporate a renovated and expanded facility at the site of the former Park Falls City Hall. Construction is set to begin this summer. They hope to open the facility in the summer of 2025.

Successful Debut for New Aspirus Tomahawk Urgent Care
Published on 04/16/2024 under News Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital launched an Urgent Care option in March. One month in, we heard from Dr. Victor Ierulli and director of nursing Carmen Viegut on a successful debut. For those unfamiliar, Urgent Care can be thought of as between a traditional appointment and the Emergency Department. In other words problems that need to be treated right away but are non-life threatening. Ierulli provided a few examples such as rashes, strains and sprains, insect bites, cuts and other minor illness. He noted it also typically leads to a more cost effective visit than a trip to the ER. Viegut said the urgent care made sense as the only health care entity in the community. She noted that they previously had people coming to the hospital seeking that service, which Aspirus offers in other Northwoods Communities include Minocqua and Rhinelander. They had a soft launch on March 18 and Viegut says that the launch went smoother than expected. Tomahawk Urgent Care is available without appointment, seven days a week between 8am and 6pm. You can utilize the Emergency Department entrance.

Tomahawk School District Encourages Family Participation in Annual Survey
Published on 04/15/2024 under News The Tomahawk School District is seeking input from student families by way of an annual survey. District Administrator Wendell Quesinberry covered the topic during his monthly visit to WJJQ this past week. The spring questionnaire is distributed to students, staff members, and families of students in the district. The district works with the specialized firm 'School Perceptions' to offer the questions and collect and present the data. That information is then used by the district to help guide strategic planning and other decisions for the district. A similar survey went out last spring. Quesinberry noted they received a good data set from both staff and students, but wanted to see the family participation increase. Last year, it was about 20% participation, this year they are hoping to reach the 50% mark. Quesinberry says the survey will take about 5-10 minutes to complete and those few minutes provide valuable information to the district. It should have been delivered to families this past week via email. The survey period runs through April 22.
