DNR Opening Weekend Wrap: Harvest Totals Up, Tag Sales Steady, Two Firearm Incidents
Published on 11/26/2025 under News
Opening weekend of the hunting season has come and gone, and hunter success was similar to recent years. The DNR released the preliminary figures for the first two days of the nine-day gun deer season. Hunters registered ~91,000 deer, compared to 87,000 registered for the same period in 2024. This is a 3.9% increase from a year ago, but 1.1% below the 5-year average. The Northern Forest Zone, has shifted from county-based management units back to habitat-based units making it difficult to compare with previous years. The DNR also provided some brief analysis. The season fell late on the calendar and breeding activity, which can enhance daytime deer movement, declined noticeably in the days leading up to the weekend. Conditions for the opening weekend were pretty favorable for hunters with cool and quiet mornings, however a lack of snow and mild afternoons were also factors. As for the second half of the season, there is snow in the forecast in Northern Wisconsin and the Thanksgiving holiday, but it's looking to be a cold but quiet second weekend. The gun-deer season continues through Sunday. ___ While the number of deer registered was up slightly, the number of hunters was nearly identical to last year. According to the DNR, the number of tags sold through opening weekend was 778,000, less then a tenth of a percent change from last year. That total includes all deer hunting licenses including archery, crossbow, conservation patron, and sports licenses. For the gun/deer season specifically, there were 538,000 tags sold. Final license sales data will be available in January and the DNR noted that will also include an analysis of the figures. ___ There were two hunting-related investigations, both in southern Wisconsin. A 24 year old died in Fond du Lac County. Based on the initial investigation, the man unintentionally fired his weapon while sitting on a saddle stand and struck himself in the chest. The other incident occurred in Grant County. A 57 year old was walking to a field when he was struck in the buttocks. He was treated at a local hospital.

As Thanksgiving travel picks up, officials are sharing their recipe for safe holiday season on the roads. As a result, the DoT is encouraging drivers to follow the rules of the road: sober driving, seat belts, patience, and courtesy for fellow drivers. DOT Secretary Kristina Boardman says, "Whether you're traveling across the state or across town, we all play a role in making Wisconsin's roads safe for the holidays." She added, "...plan ahead, allow extra travel time, slow down, and avoid distractions. Safe driving choices save lives." Boardman also used Thanksgiving to give thanks to those who ensure our roads are safe including emergency responders, highway workers and road crews. As for peak travel times, this afternoon and evening as well as Sunday afternoon are expected to be busiest. Motorists may want to leave early to avoid traffic, as mornings are typically less busy. Aspirus Offers Advice to Avoid Holiday Heartburn
Published on 11/26/2025 under News
As we feast on turkey and fixins, experts are offering some tips to keep heart burn off the menu. Natalie Wilkin is an Aspirus Pharmacy Resident. She says, "Heartburn becomes more prevalent during the holiday season, most likely due to the increasing intake of rich, fatty, or spicy foods." This is often coupled with an increase in alcohol or caffeine, along with the stress of the season." To help prevent heartburn from interrupting your celebrations, Wilkin recommends paying attention to what and how much you eat and avoiding known triggers when possible. Wilkin says over-the-counter medications can help. Antacids like Tums are best taken at the first signs of symptoms, while a histamine antagonist like Pepcid should be taken ahead of a meal believed to trigger heartburn. But Wilkin cautioned these OTC meds can interact with prescriptions. If heartburn is a chronic issue, Wilkin encourages a conversation with your healthcare provider.

Lincoln County Board Approves Mini-Grant Program for Community Groups Addressing Opioids
Published on 11/25/2025 under News
A new mini-grant program is being created in Lincoln County to address substance use through funds received from opioid lawsuit settlements. Over the past several years, Lincoln County has received more than a half million dollars through nationwide opioid lawsuit settlements. The funds do come with spending restrictions; typically earmarked for opioid remediation through prevention, awareness, or treatment. The Lincoln County Board previously set up an Opioid Settlement Task Force to make recommendations on how the money would best be spent. Among their recommendations was to use a portion of the funds to establish a mini-grant program for community organizations serving Lincoln County. The County Board approved setting aside $50,000 for these mini-grants at their September meeting. Erin Ray serves as the Opioid Settlement Task Force Coordinator. She says, "We believe that the best ideas will come from our local community." Ray added, "We are eager to see the creative projects organizations propose to help our residents and make a real impact with this funding." They identified community groups, non-profits, government agencies, schools, and youth and family organizations in Lincoln County as potential applicants. The application deadline is February 20. Additional information is available on the Lincoln County website.

Aspirus Encourage Heart Health Over Holidays, Travel
Published on 11/25/2025 under News
Aspirus is encouraging heart health over the holidays. Research shows that heart-related emergencies rise during the holiday season due to a variety of factors including travel, stress, and changes in habits. Megan Johnson APNP with Aspirus Cardiology says, "The two biggest risks we see are increased alcohol intake, which can trigger 'holiday heart syndrome' characterized by abnormal heart rhythms and missed doses of critical medications, which can lead to elevated blood pressure, strokes, or other complications." Johnson encourages mindful eating during holiday gatherings, emphasizing moderation. She says, "Enjoy the festivities and the special foods but try to eat a healthy snack beforehand and choose options that include fruits, vegetables, and proteins." When traveling, Johnson suggests bringing along an adequate supply of prescription medications, and try to maintain routine when taking the meds. If you'll be sitting in a car or plane for a long period of time, try and take breaks to get up and stretch. It's also important to stay hydrated, get adequate rest, and engage in light exercise during the season. And if you experience heart-related symptoms, seek medical attention.
