Nicolet Celebrates Spring Commencement Ceremony
Published on 04/22/2024 under News Hundreds of Nicolet College students became Nicolet graduates during their Spring Commencement held over the weekend. In all, more than 200 students were invited to participate in Saturday's ceremony. Nicolet College President Kate Ferrel says, "Earning a college credential is a valuable accomplishment and one that each graduate will proudly carry with them for the rest of their lives." She noted, "We are not only celebrating the academic accomplishments of our graduates but also their resilience, determination, and commitment to excellence." The resilience no more apparent than Kayla Fraley, who was the student speaker. Fraley initially enrolled at Nicolet more than a decade ago, following her high school graduation. Shortly, thereafter she was diagnosed with Leukemia put those plans on hold. Fraley says she was determined to put 'one foot in front of the other' which drove her to return to school. She said, "I knew that Nicolet College was the perfect place to start again, but this time as a non-traditional student." After re-enrolling last year, she is now a graduate. Fraley is currently enrolled as a transfer student at UW-Platville where she is pursuing a degree in engineering. -Photo provided by Nicolet College: Kayla Fraley, student speaker at the 2024 Nicolet College Commencement Ceremony, delivered an inspiring address to her fellow graduates, reflecting on the significance of this milestone.

Vilas County Fire Crews Respond to Wildfire; Elevated Risk Continues
Published on 04/22/2024 under News Vilas County Wildfire Burns 40+ Acres Capping off a busy week, crews responded to a wildfire up in Vilas County Sunday afternoon. According to an update from the Plum Lake Fire Department, that fire burned around 40 acres. They said the hilly terrain and previous tornado blow down made this a tough fire to fight. They added that winds were persistent and frequently shifted directions. No one was injured, though two individuals were checked by EMS and cleared. Several local fire departments provided mutual aid. Around a dozen structures were threatened by the path of the fire. The cause remains under investigation. Elevated Wildfire Conditions Officials are anticipating elevated wildfire conditions sticking around to start off the work week. Over the past week, the DNR responded to more than 120 wildfires which burned nearly 340 acres. It was the most active week this season. As is typically the case, debris burning was among the leading causes. Wildfire risk increases due to a number of factors including: warm temperatures, low humidity and winds. Although recent rain has improved conditions officials note that much of the state's vegetation is still dormant and dry from the winter. They expect wildfire season to stick around for a few more weeks. On days when conditions are elevated, they note that embers from any fire, especially burn piles and campfires, can easily escape control and cause a wildfire if not properly extinguished.
