Hatchet Cross Country Teams Compete in GNC Meet Published on 10/17/2022 under Sports

This past Saturday Tomahawk traveled west to Medford High School for the Great Northern Conference Cross-Country Championships. The girls finished second to Medford (6-time defending champions) placing six runners in the top half of the field and two Hatchets on the All-Conference squad. The boys placed third, behind Lakeland and Medford. The Boys Hatchet JV squad ended the meet with a 1st place finish, placing seven runners in the top ten.

Earning All-Conference medalist honors for the Hatchets were: Rachael Reilly, Alli Palmer, Presley Gutbrod, Sam Zastrow, and Owen Dickrell. Earning Honorable Mention status were: Morgan Hansmann, Halle Derleth, and Brett Borchardt. Rachael Reilly earned All-Conference 1st Team for the third year in a row as she placed 4th overall in a time of 20:54.

Alli Palmer earned All-Conference 2nd Team for the second year in a row as she took 11th overall in a time of 21:28. Presley Gutbrod also earned All-Conference 2nd Team for the second year in a row as he took 9th overall in a time of 18:08. Sam Zastrow and Owen Dickrell earned All-Conference 2nd Team for the first time placing 12th and 13th with times of 18:15 and 18:50.

Attaining All-Conference Honorable Mention were Morgan Hansmann taking 16th place (21:39), Halle Derleth taking 21st place (22:08), and Brett Borchardt taking 20th place (19:26). Completing the Hatchet varsity competitors were: Serena Reinke (22:12), Robin Schmidt (22:35), Marie Gorell (23:47), Ty Anthes (19:41), Taje Casey (20:03), and Jacob Riemer (20:20).

Winning the junior varsity girls race was Kambyl Mattke with an exceptional JV time of 22:44. The junior varsity boys were led by Jeremiah Johnson who placed 2nd with a time of 21:13. The rest of the junior varsity Hatchets included: Faith Derleth (23:40), Izzy Lee (23:46), Abi Micke (24:32), Lydia Shaney (25:34), Summer Gaedtke (27:26), Jennie Frederickson (36:53), Kailynn Hanse (DNC), Nathan Rosenmeier (21:26),

Elliot O'Connor (22:00), Masen Towle (22:04), Bruce Peetz (22:35), Gerard Gorell (22:43), Eli Albrent (22:56), Jacob Towle (23:05), and Cayden Shepler (24:00).

Next race for the Hatchets is Saturday, October 22nd, as Tomahawk makes the journey to Black River Falls to compete in the WIAA Sectional meet. The top two teams and the top five non-qualifying team members advance to the state meet the following weekend in Wisconsin Rapids.

Tomahawk Middle Schoolers Seeking Art Supplies for Christmas Card Project for Seniors

Published on 12/08/2025 under News Tomahawk middle schoolers have been getting into the holiday giving spirit. The students are planning to make Christmas cards for the elderly population in our community including the senior living and nursing homes. The school-wide community service project is being led by the middle school PBIS committee. They're currently asking the community to contribute art materials that could be used in making the cards. This includes any old holiday cards, and other Christmas or winter-themed scrap-booking materials, stickers, ribbons, and markers. The collection got underway last month and continues through December 15. That will allow students time to get those cards made and delivered in time for the holidays. Any donated materials can be dropped off at the middle school office.

Published on 12/08/2025 under News A Medford man has died after falling through the ice in the Washington Flowage in the Township of Hammel Friday afternoon. According to a release from the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, on Friday at approximately 4:17 pm the Taylor County dispatch received a 911 call from a woman reporting that her husband was out ice fishing on the flowage earlier in the afternoon and had not yet returned. Upon arrival, authorities saw a sled trail leading out to the open water. A sled was also located floating in the water. The release further states that Wings of Hope and Bruce's Legacy were contacted for their specialized equipment and expertise in open water searches, along with the Marathon County Sheriff's Office Dive Team. The deceased man, identified as 69-year-old Randall K. Runge, was located and carefully recovered. Authorities say there is no indication of foul play. Taylor County Deputies, along with Medford Fire personnel, Taylor County Emergency Management, and Taylor County EMS personnel were also dispatched to the scene and the investigation remains ongoing.

Published on 12/08/2025 under News In a special check presentation on Saturday our Tomahawk VFW Post 2687 presented a check to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight for $30,000.00. In attendance was State Commander Ty Letto as well as veterans who participated in past Never Forgotten Honor Flights. Post 2687 has now funded 291 veterans for their Trip of a Lifetime to Washington. A big thank you to all the people who participated and volunteer workers in the Veterans Pool Tournament last month as nearly $19,000.00 was raised in that event and other donations to the VFW made up the donation.

Published on 12/07/2025 under Sports Tomahawk's boys basketball squad suffered their first loss of the season in their home and Great Northern Conference opener Friday, losing to Antigo, 61-23. The Hatchets struggled with foul trouble in the first half of the game and mustered just nine points in the second half. Ryan Montag led the way in scoring with nine points for the Hatchets. Tomahawk's record drops to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in Great Northern Conference play.

Published on 12/07/2025 under Sports The Hatchet girls' wrestling squad finished in the top ten out of 30 teams at their invite in Antigo Friday night, placing seventh. Two wrestlers finished in the top three at the invite. The highest finisher came from Riley Wilmot at 185, placing second. Kylie Peissig placed third at 114 pounds. Abigail Schertz and Abbie Rosenmeier each finished fourth at 120 and 107 pounds, respectively. Tomahawk's next time hitting the mats will be Tuesday at St. Croix Falls.

Published on 12/05/2025 under Sports Tomahawk's hockey squad flexed their will, dominating Rhinelander in their home opener Saturday night at SARA Park, 13-1. The Hatchets scored eight goals in the first period and five in the second period, winning their seventh straight over their Great Northern Conference rivals. Tomahawk got hat tricks from Jett Reilly and Jonah Dickens. Breck Stromberg found the back of the net twice. The Hatchets improve their record to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in Great Northern Conference play. Tomahawk is back in action Tuesday for another Great Northern Conference game at SARA Park against Northland Pines. The game will be broadcast on Northwoods 92.5 WJJQ with Alex Koch and Keith Hanse in the broadcast booth. The Fehrman Orthodontics Radio Pregame Show will get underway at 6:35 with opening faceoff at 7:00.

Published on 12/05/2025 under Sports The Hatchet girls' basketball squad got back in the win column Thursday night, using a strong second half to defeat the Red Robins at Antigo, 50-36. After getting off to a slow start and leading by just two at halftime, Tomahawk put 34 points up in the second half and never looked back. Freya Alberg led the way with 19 points for the Hatchets. Anita Ziert finished with 13 points to help Tomahawk improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in Great Northern Conference play. The Hatchets are back in action next Thursday for the first half of a non-conference basketball doubleheader with Three Lakes.

Published on 12/05/2025 under Sports The Hatchet boys' wrestling squad opened up their season with a sweep of their triangular at the Hatchet House Thursday. Tomahawk began the night with a win over Great Northern Conference foe Lakeland, 52-30. The Hatchets then ended the night with a victory over Athens, 52-24. Tomahawk begins their season 2-0 and 1-0 in Great Northern Conference play. The Hatchets are back in action Saturday for a quad at Chetek-Weyerhauser.

Published on 12/05/2025 under Sports Tomahawk Girls' Wrestling began their season going 2-1 in their quad at Shiocton Thursday night. The Hatchets squeaked out a 31-30 win over Wrightstown. Match Two for Tomahawk against Oshkosh West ended in a 27-27 tie, but the Hatchets won on a tiebreaker. The final match of the night for Tomahawk ended with them losing to the host, Shiocton, 36-24. The Hatchets now stand at 2-1 on the season. Tomahawk is back in action tonight for an invite down in Antigo. That begins at 4:30.

Published on 12/05/2025 under News Holiday music certainly makes the season, and it's even better live. Here in Tomahawk the St. Mary's Choir packs the house for a Christmas concert each year, and it's just a few days away. Ahead of Sunday's performance we were joined by long-time director Jan Huseby, along with Sandy Bishop and Lynn Grube. While many folks are just transitioning into the Christmas holiday, the performers been busy with rehearsals for several months now. The choir is comprised of 70 voices, along with some instrumentalists. Grube says that includes seven or eight newcomers. While most of the choir is comprised of locals, they do get a handful of singers who travel to Tomahawk weekly for rehearsals from neighboring communities. This year's show is titled 'Glory to the Newborn King. 'They keep the concert fresh by changing out the music each year, and Huseby says she is continually keeping a list of songs. It will feature a mix of styles and songs focused on peace, joy and hope. with some familiar tunes and some lesser-known pieces. A special highlight this year, they're incorporating a dedication to military families. The St. Mary's Christmas concert is free, but they will accept donations to help cover some of the music costs. It's coming up Sunday afternoon starting at 4pm. They'll begin seating at 3pm and note that they typically fill quickly. We'll once again be recording the concert to bring back to our listeners on Christmas Eve.
