Aspirus: World Stroke Day; Know Symptoms and Seek Treatment Published on 10/30/2024 under News Aspirus: World Stroke Day; Know Symptoms and Seek Treatment
Tuesday was World Stroke Day, and Aspirus encourages people to learn the symptoms.

According to the CDC, someone experiences a stroke in the United States every 40 seconds. A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is blocked restricting oxygen and nutrients. This affects a person's motor skills and other vital functions.

At Aspirus, Dr. Fareed Suri says the amount of time the brain is deprived of oxygen determines the extend of the damage. He added, "The sooner we are able to restore the blood flow, the more we are able to save the brain."

High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and smoking are the four major risk factors for stroke, though it can affect anyone. Symptoms will vary, and that's where the BE FAST checklist comes in.
Balance – Sudden loss of coordination or balance

Eyes – Sudden change in vision

Face – Sudden weakness on one side of the face or facial droop

Arm – Sudden arm or leg weakness or numbness

Based on the preliminary count in Lincoln County, there were 17,302 ballots compared to 16,572 in the last presidential election. The 700 additional voters amounts to a 4.2% increase. Lincoln County remains redder than the state as a whole. Donald Trump received approximately 61% of the county's vote; that's the same as 2020. Kamala Harris under-performed Joe Biden by about 2 percentage points. There was also slight increase in the number of third party votes this cycle. The presidential race wasn't the only item on the ballot, but some voters avoided down-ballot races. There were approximately 200 'undervotes' for the US Senate race between Tammy Baldwin and Eric Hovde; and the statewide constitutional amendment on US citizen voting was skipped by about 1,200 voters. The state, as a whole, had a record 3.4 million votes. The turnout was approximately 75%, an increase of 2.1% from the 2020 election.

Rhinelander HS Trick-or-Can Another Success
Published on 11/06/2024 under News The Rhinelander Food Pantry is better stocked thanks to a group of students, and the generosity of the community. Ahead of Halloween, the student members of the Rhinelander High School FBLA/DECA participated in their annual Trick-or-Can food drive. Instead of the traditional Food Drive where students sit at a table and wait for the community to bring the food to them, Trick or Can brings the food drive to the community's door, while also raising awareness for an issue in our community. The students distributed collection bags in select neighborhoods around the community. Then the day before Halloween, around a dozen students went door-to-door to collect. They weren't after candy, but non-perishable food items. In the end the students were able to deliver around 550 items to the Rhinelander Food Pantry. Trick-or-Can is actually a statewide campaign, and the Rhinelander students were once again near the top of collections in Wisconsin. They hope to get more people and neighborhoods involved next October.-Photo provided by the Rhinelander School District-
