Aspirus: Finding the Right Allergy Treatment
Published on 05/13/2025 under News
Warmer weather means the return of allergies, and local experts are helping choose the right relief. Store shelves are filled with over-the-counter medications which address different allergy symptoms. Rebecca Thao is a pharmacy resident at Aspirus. She says, "Antihistamines and decongestants are the most common OTC allergy medications." Antihistamines help with sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes, while decongestants are better for nasal congestion. Thao says, "If symptoms overlap, using both can provide more complete relief." While OTC medications work well for mild allergies, Thao advises seeking medical attention if symptoms become severe, persist despite treatment, or interfere with daily life. She explained, "These OTC medications are intended for short-term use." Thao also warned about interactions with other prescription medications that can cause side effects or reduce effectiveness. That's a conversation to have with your provider. Beyond medication, the provider says small lifestyle adjustments can also reduce allergy symptoms including regular hand washing, washing your face and showering after outdoor exposure. You can also minimize allergens in the home by keeping it clean and utilizing an air purifier. Aspirus says these simple strategies, along with appropriate medication, can help make allergy season more manageable.

Officials continue to stress safety as wildfire conditions remain elevated here in Northern Wisconsin. Sunday brought extreme fire risk and a red flag warning. That continues Monday afternoon. Fire crews around the Northwoods were kept busy throughout the weekend where more than a dozen wildfires were reported. This includes three more in Lincoln County, four in Oneida County and six in Vilas County. The causes varied and included debris burning, cooking devices, power equipment, and firearm shooting targets.
